Join NYSSSWA’s Western Region at Riverfield Restaurant for its May Buffet Luncheon which will feature a presentation on “Adding to Our SEL Toolbox of Interventions: Utilizing Mindfulness, Meditation & Self Defense Practices in the Classroom.” by Tom McDonnell & Peg Barrett, LCSW. Earn up to 2 Continuing Education hours.
Presenters will demonstrate and SSW will also participate in experiential techniques for assisting students. Recent research has demonstrated that daily mindfulness practice (focusing on the breath and mindful movement) can change the structure of the brain in highly beneficial ways. When students feel safe in their environment, it removes the stresses of feeling anxious, hyper-vigilant, and physically challenged. In addition to the brain boost of meditation, positive changes occur in the gut, heart and help students to increase academic achievement and improve social emotional learning.
