“Culturally Competent Work with Unaccompanied Minors in the Educational Milieu”
Presented by:  Stephanie Carnes, LL.M., LCSW

Between 2014 and 2015, more than 77,000 unaccompanied children from Central America were released to local communities in the United States, and more children arrive at the border every day. Most of these children are fleeing horrific gang violence, crushing poverty, and a lack of educational opportunities. They endure significant challenges after arriving in the United States, including mental health issues related to traumatic experiences, reunifying with long-separated family members, acclimating to a new culture and language, and obtaining legal relief. This presentation will serve as a lens through which to identify, understand, and mitigate these challenges in the educational setting.
